I use color and paint to describe
relationships between people, and people to their environment, particularly
life in the city. I am fascinated by personal narratives and dramas juxtaposed
against the background of the pulsating cityscape. Inner and outer dialogues
between the figures in my paintings are revealed through layers of transparent
paint. Recently I have added collage to the paintings to increase the intensity
of the painted reality.
I tend to work in series: From the “Family Snapshots” series, I wanted
to portray an essence, especially the strength of the women, passed on to me
from my female relatives. In the “Blue” series, images flowing through
swirls of colors lead the viewer into a world I create consisting of blueness
as a place to get lost in-ocean and sky, as well as orange, blue’s counterpart-fiery,
hot , angry, like sun and fire, burning colors to express intensity. The “City
People” series reflects people of all kinds who live in the city. Each
painting in this series explores the complexities of personal inner life and
the relationship to the public through figurative stories. Brightly painted
figures are set in the street, in relation to each other, and the surrounding
cityscape. My most recently completed series, “The Shoprite” series,
depicts the customers and staff, as they shop and work in my local mega supermarket.
I am currently beginning, “Generations of Brooklyn”, in which multi-generational
families from different backgrounds and neighborhoods in Brooklyn are depicted
as they are today, against the backdrop of their particular histories. In this
body of work, I am investigating vivid examples of how history intersects with
the subject’s life through their own personal narrative.
