Artist's Statement

My primary means of artistic expression is watercolor and my work is in general representational, as my abstract work is taken from a landscape or still life. I work from my own surroundings and try to find captivating angles and juxtapositons in the patterns before me. When I plan a still life, I work in much the same manner as when I paint a landscape, emphasizing the most interesting view, shapes, colors and patterns to create something unusual with a degree of tension in the piece. The still lifes are composed from objects that are familiar and interesting to me, but put into the composition in such a way that would make it unconventional. Although the paintings are not narrative, I do try to create a mood and feel for the relationships of the objects. My southern background and interest in the past do influence my work and from time to time some autobiographical elements will appear in my paintings.

My goals are to continue to grow as an artist and to learn to utilize new mediums. I am working more in oils and monotypes and feel that my art will continue to change and develop in new directions.
