Every painting that I create has a challenge to myself in it. That challenge
may be the size of the canvas, the materials used, the colors and their combinations,
the shapes, the symbols and/or the message that I intend to
convey.
The materials are oil paintings and prints. Sizes range from 8 inches on a
side to 8 feet. The work is aimed to be of lasting quality in every manner,
including the application of materials. Having admired the art of many
previous artists, I hope to join them in having "conversations over time"
with viewers.
I am told that the works are "deceptively simple" (M. J. Alford).
Of the more
recent work, one curator said "powerful forms in a serene setting -- an
interesting contradiction" (R. Aranda-Alvarado, Ph. D.). Another curator
wrote "setting a tonal mood while highlighting the vastness of the world
around us" (D. Markonish).
The newer works began after a drive trip through the upper United States into
Canada on the way to Alaska.A friend and I had intended to ride motorcycles
up there one summer long
ago... when the road was gravel. Fortunately we went elsewhere and in a car.
The drive to Alaska meant unending green, magnificent autumn dark clouds and
silhouetted mountains. There are few towns, let alone cities. Upon return,
the landscape's shapes and colors -- in fact the entire experience --
compelled the art to change.
My art is no longer overt symbolism. Instead it
is the translation of landscapes through this artist's mind and hand.
The older, symbolic work refers to various old and new cultures. My purpose
is to unify and strengthen the varieties of living creatures we know. My work
speaks to both genders, seeking to link rather than separate us. For example,
the striped female being from ancient Greece (Mycenea, 1500 B.C.) and the
Kachinas (and other Native American beings) represent cultures known to
respect the rich diversity of all living creatures. Knowledge of history is
not a prerequisite to enjoy my work, but can enrich the viewer's experience.
I hope that you enjoy the adventures that I have created in art.
